It already follows the new release cycle without teeny releases and represents selected changes to improve stability and security plus some new enhancements and features. Main highlights include INTEL-SA-00233 (MDS) mitigation, various kernel data leak fixes, smtoff property to disable SMT explicitly in  <a href=\"http:\/\/netbsd.gw.com\/cgi-bin\/man-cgi?rc.conf+5.i386+NetBSD-8.1\">rc.conf(5)<\/a>, addition of <a href=\"https:\/\/netbsd.gw.com\/cgi-bin\/man-cgi?mfii+4.i386+NetBSD-8.1\">mfii(4)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/netbsd.gw.com\/cgi-bin\/man-cgi?bwfm+4.i386+NetBSD-8.1\">bwfm(4)<\/a> drivers, DRM\/KMS improvements, performance regression fix in tmpfs, updated <a href=\"https:\/\/netbsd.gw.com\/cgi-bin\/man-cgi?dhcpcd+8.i386+NetBSD-8.1\">dhcpcd(8)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/netbsd.gw.com\/cgi-bin\/man-cgi?httpd+8.i386+NetBSD-8.1\">httpd(8)<\/a>, fixes for <a href=\"https:\/\/netbsd.gw.com\/cgi-bin\/man-cgi?sh+1.i386+NetBSD-8.1\">sh(1)<\/a>, reproducible builds, network drivers, thread local storage (TLS) in position independent executables (PIE).
