NetBSD 8.0 RC2 released

Last week the NetBSD team has announced the second release candidate for NetBSD 8. Compared to the first one it fixed Intel 10 Gbit ethernet driver bug , includes newly discovered Intel FPU security bug mitigation, as well other kernel and security fixes. Full list of changes since NetBSD 7 can be found here, since initial 8 branch here. Binaries can be downloaded from this location or any of ftp mirrors. Please test it and submit feedback to the NebBSD team.

NetBSD ARM bootable images, new desktop environments, security audit

Lately the NetBSD team puts lots of effort on ARM 64 bit port and some new ARM SoCs support including Allwinner ones. The list of supported Allwinner based boards can be found here. Additionally one can download 32 bit and 64 bit ready-to-go SD card bootable  images in http://www.invisible.ca/arm. What is more, NetBSD blog posted an annotated look at a NetBSD Pinebook’s startup.

Finally there is some effort in progress on making Cinnamon desktop environment available for NetBSD!

The last but not the least, security audit of NetBSD’s security stack was performed. It resulted in series of security advisories. They can be found in security page. It is recommended to review them and apply fixes to affected systems.

Running Xorg and wine on VT310-DP

I finally had a chance to run quite stable X server on VT310-DP system. I changed my kernel configuration to use viadrmums driver instead of viadrm which was causing system reboot on X.org server initialization. However there is an issue that mouse pointer is not visible, it is working  though on blind clicking (there is an old bug report regarding that but it probably wasn’t look upon since the end of discussion almost four years ago Update: It seems that openchrome officially doesn’t support hardware cursor for integrated graphics in the chipset which is mentioned in the bug report, however it shouldn’t be the case for CN400 chipset, so possibly it is not related bug. Nevertheless, enabling SWCURSOR works as workaround). Thus I had a chance to test my  wine build a bit. Building wine instructions still holds true on my configuration for wine-devel package. Unfortunately, it appears not very usable, most applications just crush or start very slowly.  Nevertheless, I made a screenshot with notepad running (on wmaker wm).

NetBSD 8.0 RC1 dmesg

I have updated my setup to 8.0 RC1, so I am sharing dmesg with you. Currently my primary computer is based on Ryzen 5 1600 CPU and Biostar X370 GT5 motherboard.  Everything except X sets was compiled from source (including packages as I am using pkgsrc).  Kernel was compiled from unmodified GENERIC configuration. Graphics card (Radeon RX460) doesn’t seem supported yet, therefore using Xorg is a limited experience.

NetBSD 8.0 RC1 released

The NetBSD team has announced the first release candidate for NetBSD 8. It has many changes since NetBSD 7, some of highlights include USB3 support (finally!), WAPBL stability and performance improvements, meltdown and spectre mitigations, UEFI bootloader, nvme and various other drivers, lots of updates to 3rd party software, increased ARM boards support. Read more on release announcement or read full list of changes here. You can download binaries from here or any of ftp mirrors. Please test it and submit feedback to the NebBSD team.

NetBSD is 25 years

Besides the 7.1.2 release I have also missed one more event in NetBSD history. It was the 25 years birthday for NetBSD on Wednesday (cvs log history shows first commit from 21st of March, 1993). Happy Birthday to NetBSD team and keep up the good work!

NetBSD 7.1.2 released

NetBSD team announced second security/bugfix update of NetBSD 7.1 branch on 15 of March, 2018 .  As usual you can download 7.1.2 version by choosing one of the NetBSD mirrors or torrent files. File hashes can be verified at this location. Release announcement and full list of changes can be found here and here respectively. It is strongly recommended to update your system in case you are running earlier version currently.

NetBSD 7.1.1 released

NetBSD team announced 7.1.1 release on 22 of December, 2017. It is security/critical update for NetBSD 7.1 branch. Download mirrors can be found here. Preferred way to download ISO and USB disk images is using torrent files. Finally file hashes can be verified in this location. Release announcement and changes can be found here and here. It is highly recommended to update your system if you are using 7.1 branch.

Building Wine on NetBSD 8.0 beta with pkgsrc current

For personal purposes I needed to build wine on my VT310-DP board using current pkgsrc package manager. I initially  tried to build and install emulators/wine package for this purpose as an “obvious” choice. It contains a build for wine-1.6.2. I face two compilation issues during the build. First build issue was complaining about undefined yywrap variable in tools/wrc/parser.yy.c file.   I “fixed” it by commenting out //#undef yywrap.

--- tools/wrc/parser.yy.c 2017-08-19 15:29:22.954733511 +0300
+++ tools/wrc/parser.yy.c 2017-08-19 15:30:39.061280133 +0300
@@ -837,7 +837,7 @@

 #include "parser.tab.h"
-#undef yywrap
+//#undef yywrap

 /* Always update the current character position within a line */
 #define YY_USER_ACTION char_number+=yyleng; wanted_id = want_id; want_id = 0;

Another one was server/ptrace.c issue. There were two code blocks using dbregs.drX variables (X is a number from 0-7), for example  context->debug.i386_regs.dr0 = dbregs.dr0. Compiler was complaining that non of drX variables were defined in the struct. From the code I realized that it was using dbreg struct. Then I checked system’s /usr/include/machine/reg.h file, dbreg struct was defined like this:

/*
 * Debug Registers
 *
 * DR0-DR3 Debug Address Registers
 * DR4-DR5 Reserved
 * DR6 Debug Status Register
 * DR7 Debug Control Register
 */
struct dbreg {
 int dr[8];
};

It is visible that that dbreg struct has one dr variable which is an array of int. So I replaced all the dbregs.drX lines with array indexes instead dbregs.dr[X] line. It helped and wine was build. Unfortunately running any executable was failing with an error message: “wine: failed to create the process heap”. I tried to investigate error online but it was usually pointing to some old wine bug and workaround to build a manual Linux kernel which I wasn’t sure how to apply on NetBSD. One thing that caught my eye was that NetBSD has a newer wine package called wine-devel. It builds wine-1.9.18. During wine-devel compilation I didn’t face parser.yy.c issue anymore but ptrace.c one was still the same. I made this modification to the file:

Applying this patch fixed the build and I had a newer version of wine ready. Trying it out proved to be successful for some small Windows executable files I was planning to use. Old wine bug didn’t reoccur. So if you want to build wine on NetBSD 8.0 beta and current pkgsrc I recommend using wine-devel package and apply the patch above if build fails.

NetBSD 8 beta testing

I must admit I haven’t been using NetBSD for any serious workloads for years, partially due to personal reasons as I was living abroad for several years. However, I still spend considerable time to keep up to date installations (8 beta branch currently) and test it on various hardware including attempts to run it in any possible way on hardware which doesn’t seem supported. These attempts sometimes result in few submitted bugs or communication in mailing lists, sometimes it can be just an interesting story to tell. I usually keep NetBSD (amd64) system in one or two external hard drives (USB, thunderbolt) except when system doesn’t support x86-64 extensions or are not x86 in general (have two Alpha CPU based systems but lately they are dormant and I don’t have a chance to test them).

One such non 64-bit test system is my old VIA VT-310DP based computer.  I’ve been using since 2008. It is a quite unique board featuring two physical VIA EDEN-N CPUs on mini-itx form factor board (haven’t seen such decision on any other mini-itx board yet, probably it was bold move to enter emerging multi core CPU race from AMD and Intel). Though I was trying to replace it many times with newer boards but eventually it became permanent NetBSD testbed when others went away. Using same system for a long time shows quite a good progress in system stability and support. I’ve started with NetBSD 5 release candidate build which couldn’t boot without multi-CPU support disabled and required ACPI disabled as well for a bit more stability. Even booted the network was completely unstable, USB devices were crashing (most likely ACPI issues) including older 4th based releases. Padlock engine was failing as well. System crash, failed network or USB device error weren’t something uncommon those days. Most of them were fixed for the 6th release, some even on subsequent 5.x releases. One fix I was quite proud to help to resolve myself (specifically multi CPU issue). Just recently I also reported an issue related to RNG refactoring. NetBSD 8.0 beta currently works very well and stable in the terminal.  X.org is still a different story but I was never focusing on it as the system integrated graphics is not very capable for such tasks anyway with only 64MB shared memory max avail in BIOS (plus considering weak system performance it is more suitable for background tasks like NAS server for example).

Another playground was my Mac Mini system (Late 2014 model, MGEN2AE/A).  I tried to boot NetBSD 7 on it over a year ago but the USB 3 was still experimental and I couldn’t find any way to boot into it (still didn’t have thunderbolt hard drive at that time). NetBSD 8 beta branch has xhci driver enabled by default, unfortunately system still hangs on the boot (pretty sure it is related to USB 3 support). I managed to boot into the system by disabling ACPI but without USB support I don’t have any input devices available, so it is literally useless. It is possible to boot into the system from external thunderbolt drive (not sure how is it routed internally but NetBSD manages to identify it the same as SATA connected drive) or internal mac drive.  Personally I used USB flash drive to load a bootloader and kept installation on the thunderbolt drive (boot loader can start loading the kernel even if it is in USB drive). Unfortunately till USB 3 support is fixed, dmesg (from the boot without ACPI support) is the only thing I can share here.

Other two systems I have tried had much better luck and hardware support. The first one is lenovo G50-80 laptop with Intel i3-4030U CPU. I needed to disable secure boot and enable legacy boot support in BIOS but USB3 was working perfectly (which wasn’t the case with in NetBSD 7 experimental support) and I could boot into the system from USB3 port. WIFI setup was also seamless. Looking at dmesg gives a strong hope that system can be quite well supported and usable. But I didn’t go further than that. Major testing was done on my main desktop computer with Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 (rev1) motherboard, AMD Opteron 3280 CPU and Radeon RX 460 GPU. I even compiled Mate desktop on it (from pkgsrc). It works really smoothly, all hardware seems to be supported pretty well and it can be used as a desktop system for sure. I haven’t done that for while but I believe I can spend some time in NetBSD again :).
