NetBSD 8 branch created

I haven’t posted any news for some time but NetBSD development is moving forward nevertheless. Just recently netbsd-8 branch have been created which marked the beginning of the NetBSD 8.0 release process.

According to official NetBSD blog there is no strict timeline for the release date but there is a believe it will be shorter than previous major releases. New release will finally support USB 3 by default, sdmmc will include UHS-I and HS200 transfer modes, audio system was overhauled as well,  ARM support was greatly improved and many other fixes and improvements were introduced for various platforms supported by the system.

You can test it by downloading latest binaries or fetching sources and building manually from netbsd-8 source branch.

GSoC should be already underway and the NetBSD project selected three  students to work on multi-packages support  to pkgsrc (Leonardo Taccari), LFS cleanup (Maya Rashish) and Anita support for multiple virtual machine systems and more architectures within them  to improve testing coverage (Utkarsh Anand).

Besides NetBSD news Hubert Feyrer released 2.6 version of his NetBSD based g4u disk cloning utility after five years of updating and testing. You can download it here.

NetBSD 7.1 released

NetBSD team announced 7.1 release on 11 of March, 2017. Release announcement is available here. You can download it from any of the mirrors using torrents, FTP or other services. Full list of changes can be found here. Main highlights are Raspberry Pi Zero support, initial DRM/KMS support for NVIDIA graphics via nouveau (Disabled by default. Uncomment nouveau and nouveaufb in your kernel config to test), the addition of vioscsi, a driver for the Google Compute Engine disk, improved Linux compatibility and numerous bug fixes and stability improvements.

On the side note NetBSD is accepted as one of mentoring organizations in the 2017 Google Summer of Code. Initial proposals can be found here but official application process will start at 20th of March.

In meantime I have already started to play with NetBSD current (future 8 release) already. It lead to one bugfix for VIA RNG already. Hope to find more in the future.

NetBSD 7.1 RC1 released

Over a year have passed since initial release of NetBSD 7 and the project have reached a new milestone recently. The first release candidate of 7.1 branch is available since 9th of January. You can download it here. It is a major feature and bug fixes update for 7 release and it contains quite a big list of changes.  Please test it and submit all feedback back to the team through pr or appropriate mailing list. Thank you.

NetBSD 7.0.2 released

NetBSD 7.0.2, second security/bug fix version for 7.0 release branch was released on 21 of October, 2016. Release notes can be found here. Complete list of changes are listed here. Choose your preferred download option and mirror from here.

NetBSD 7.0.1 released, 50th release of pkgsrc

NetBSD 7.0.1, first security/bug fix version for 7.0 release branch was released on 28 of May, 2016. As always it is strongly recommended to update to the latest version if you still use earlier releases. Release notes can be found here. Choose download mirrors from here.

On the other news pkgrsrc  announced pkgsrc-2016Q1, their 50th  release on 9 of May, 2016. In honor to this unusual event several interviews can be found with Joerg Sonnenberger, Sevan Janiyan and Thomas Klausner.

NetBSD accepted for GSoC and other news

I wasn’t posting any news lately but it doesn’t mean nothing is happening around NetBSD project. The NetBSD Foundation was accepted as GSoC (Google Summer of Code) organization for 2016. If I’m not wrong project wasn’t participating in GSoC last year, so it’s a welcoming come back after missing one year. Interested students can submit proposals from 14 of March.

Another news came from NetBSD core team. Allan Barrett decided to step down from the group for the personal reasons. Another long-time NetBSD developer, Martin Husemann, took his place and joined the core team.

On hardware side just recently released Raspberry Pi 3 got initial support on current branch, however, still in aarch32 mode.

Last but not the least I just moved full blog page to https and changed theme to  twentyforteen.

NetBSD 7.0 released

The NetBSD project announced their fifteen major release today! NetBSD 7.0 is officially released. This release has lots of improvements, bug fixes and new features. It also supports bunch of new hardware especially in ARM space (including multiprocessor support for them). There is also one new port, epoc32 (Psion EPOC PDAs). GPT support in sysinst, improvements on handling of disk wedges, DRM/KMS support for accelerated graphics on x86, multiprocessor support on USB subsystem are major highlights for this release for myself. Please read release announcement and full list of changes between 6 and 7 releases for more information. System  can be downloaded from any of the mirrors and torrents.

I was expecting to write article on Mac mini late 2014 but unfortunately I still haven’t managed to install NetBSD on it. Though I have several tricks under my sleeves. Hopefully some of them will work. If I’ll have successful installation I’ll update on it.

It was also nice small article about what to expect in NetBSD 7.0 release but it’s not working for me now. If it will try to read it here (cached page)

NetBSD 7.0 RC3 released

Not the long after RC2 release we can enjoy the new RC3 release. The NetBSD project team expects it to be the last before official 7.0 release. The full list can be found CHANGES-7.0 file, highlights in the release announcement. Please test it and let’s make NetBSD 7.0 happen soon.

NetBSD 7.0 RC2 released

NetBSD 7.0 RC2 was released on 28 of July. It contains some software updates and bug fixes. You can read more about it in release announcement or you can peek at the full list in the bellow part of CHANGES-7.0 file (after “Welcome to 7.0_RC1!” line).

On personal note I was a bit unsuccessful to run RC1 on my current hardware. The main reason was disabled USB3 by default (experimental support still can be enabled by recompiling the kernel). Lately I wasn’t using NetBSD that much but I’ll try to find time to run it eventually.

NetBSD 7.0 RC1 released

NetBSD 7 branch was created about 10 months ago and it is closing to the final stage of development finally. NetBSD 7.0 RC1 release was announced yesterday by Soren Jacobsen. Release announcement highlights greatly improved AMD and Intel graphics support, numerous new compatible ARM boards, GPT support in sysinst (my favourite feature), Lua kernel scripting, multiprocessor USB stack, NPF improvements and GCC 4.8.4/LLVM/Clang 3.6.1 (optionally). Of course, there are much more improvements and bugfixes too (all changes can be found in downloads CHANGES file). You can download it from here. Of course, please try it and test it.
